Job Description: Communications Officer

The Communications Officer will independently plan and implement communication and media strategies, leveraging technical expertise to enhance WFP’s visibility and influence in Nigeria. The role involves working closely with the Head of Communications and the Regional Communications Officer to align the Country Office’s communication activities with regional and corporate goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategy Development: Create, maintain, and update a communication strategy and work plan that aligns with WFP’s corporate goals, enhancing the organization’s brand and supporting fundraising efforts.
  • Media Monitoring and Analysis: Track and analyze media trends to identify issues and propose solutions to enhance communication effectiveness.
  • Content Creation: Develop core communication products, including field stories, press releases, speeches, and op-eds, tailored to target audiences.
  • Campaign Management: Plan and execute communication campaigns to positively influence public perception, opinion leaders, the Nigerian government, and donors.
  • Media Engagement: Actively seek media coverage for WFP’s operations and food security issues, and build relationships with national and international media.
  • Crisis Communication: Manage the flow of information to the media, identifying and mitigating reputational risks.
  • Donor Visibility: Produce donor-specific visibility content, including text, photos, and videos, for various platforms to support fundraising.
  • Reporting: Prepare accurate and timely reports on communication activities to facilitate decision-making and evaluate objectives.
  • Capacity Building: Train and guide WFP staff on communication strategies to ensure consistent, high-quality outputs.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with UN, media, and other partners to increase national awareness of food security and Zero Hunger initiatives.
  • Social Media Management: Oversee digital and social media platforms, ensuring content is relevant and timely, and maintain a social media calendar.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Contribute to emergency preparedness and response plans, including the development of performance plans and risk mitigations.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Educational Background: Advanced university degree in Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications, or a related field. A first university degree with additional work experience may also be considered.
  • Experience: At least five years of professional experience in communications, media, or digital platforms, with demonstrated leadership in managing teams and delivering innovative projects.
  • Technical Skills: Expertise in communication techniques, social media strategy, and digital content creation, including video optimization for social platforms.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in English (level C) is required, along with fluency in the language of the duty station. Intermediate knowledge of a second UN language (e.g., French, Spanish, Arabic) is an advantage.
  • Other Skills: Strong analytical abilities, excellent writing skills, and experience in acting as a spokesperson. Familiarity with humanitarian operations is preferred.
