This enchanting performance marked the beginning of a monthlong music and food festival in the township of Zhaxizom. Perched at an impressive altitude of approximately 4,200 meters above sea level, this small town lies at the foot of Mount Qomolangma, the highest peak in the world. Located under the jurisdiction of Tingri County and just 49 kilometers away from Mount Qomolangma’s Base Camp, Zhaxizom has become a popular stop for travelers on their journey to conquer the majestic mountain.
One such traveler, Zhang, hailing from northeast China’s Liaoning Province, found himself captivated by the mesmerizing festival. Originally planning to head straight to Mount Qomolangma Base Camp, he couldn’t resist staying in this charming town for several more days to savor the delightful music and cuisine before resuming his adventure.
Migmar Lhamo, a local college student, shared her excitement, stating, “The festival not only enriches our lives but also provides an opportunity for people to learn more about our town. It will undoubtedly become a new attraction for tourists and contribute to the development of our local culture and tourism.”
The county government, taking note of the festival’s immense potential, has planned a series of events during the month, including live music shows, breathtaking fireworks displays, tantalizing delicacy fairs, and enchanting bonfire parties. This thoughtful curation aims to provide both residents and tourists with an unforgettable experience immersed in the rich tapestry of local culture.
Nearly three decades ago, China’s central government made a significant decision to support Tibet’s development. In 1994, a pairing assistance policy was established to link specific areas of Tibet with central state organizations, provincial-level regions, and state-owned enterprises. This policy has proven fruitful, with Tingri County working closely with a pairing-policy group from Shanghai in recent years to boost the town’s development and achieve rural revitalization.
Zhu Dongfeng, an official from Tingri County, expressed optimism about the festival’s impact on the local economy, believing it will serve as a catalyst for further growth and prosperity.
