Overview of the European Union CREATE Green Africa Scholarship 2025

The European Union (EU) is offering the CREATE Green Africa Scholarship 2025 under its Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme, designed to enhance climate-oriented skills and qualifications across Africa. The program, named “Climate Research and Education to Advance Green Development in Africa (CREATE-GreenAfrica),” supports the training of graduate students in African universities, focusing on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Key Objectives

CREATE-GreenAfrica aims to:

  • Develop climate-focused expertise through cross-border academic mobility and knowledge sharing.
  • Equip students, trainees, and staff with the necessary skills to address climate variability, environmental sustainability, and resource management.

From 2024 to 2028, the program will train 35 Master’s and 12 PhD students in the following thematic areas:

  • Environmental Sustainability: Impact assessment, adaptation, and mitigation of climate variability and change.
  • Climate/Weather Processes: Understanding local and global climate processes for better forecasting and early warning systems.
  • Food System Resilience: Addressing the impacts of climate change on food production systems.
  • Gender-Climate-Food Nexus: Exploring the intersection of gender, climate policies, and food systems.
  • Climate Change and Water Resources: Managing water resources in the context of climate change.
  • Natural Resource Management: Focusing on collective action and ecosystem-based adaptation to climate change.

Scholarship Details

The CREATE Green Africa Scholarship offers:

  • Full Coverage: Tuition fees, monthly stipends (€1,230 for PhD, €890 for Master’s), application fees, accommodation, travel expenses, and student union fees.
  • Insurance: Comprehensive coverage for accidents, travel, and health during the scholarship period.
  • Funding Duration: Supports full degree programs and short-term credit-seeking mobility.
  • Host Countries: Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the European Union CREATE Green Africa Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be African nationals residing in Africa at the time of application.
  • Apply to study at a host institution in a country other than their own (outside their home country).
  • Female and disadvantaged/vulnerable candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. All applications will be treated with confidentiality.

Selection Criteria

The selection process follows these eight steps:

  1. Application Submission: The coordinating institution receives applications and forwards them to the respective host universities for shortlisting.
  2. Shortlisting: Host universities compile and return shortlisted candidates to the coordinator.
  3. Evaluation: The CREATE-GreenAfrica selection committee reviews the shortlisted candidates, assessing eligibility, academic document authenticity, and qualification.
  4. Notification: Results are communicated to applicants, awardees, and host institutions.
  5. Appeals: Any appeals regarding the selection process may be further reviewed by the CREATE-GreenAfrica selection committee.
  6. Contract Signing: Scholarship beneficiaries sign contracts with CREATE-GreenAfrica, which are then sent to host universities.
  7. Travel Facilitation: Host universities facilitate the travel and settlement of awardees and assign academic mentors.
  8. Reimbursement: Awardees cover their travel costs initially and are reimbursed upon arrival.
