The HumAngle Foundation is thrilled to announce the launch of the HumAngle Technology and Civic Impact Fellowship 2024. This fellowship aims to equip civic society members and other relevant actors with advanced technology and innovation training, enabling them to drive actionable advocacy and accountability within public institutions.

Fellowship Overview

The fellowship targets journalists, activists, and civil society members with a proven track record of excellence, drawn from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. It comprises a two-part model:

  1. Five-day in-person training in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
  2. Three-month post-training period to allow fellows to put their learnings into practice.

Training Topics

The training sessions will cover:

  • Policy Advocacy and Public Accountability
  • Research and Fact-checking for Social Impact
  • Maximizing Artificial Intelligence in the Nigerian Context
  • Data for Civic Engagement
  • Techniques for Immersive Storytelling
  • Ethical Considerations in Leveraging Technology for Impact
  • Conflict Reporting and Humanitarian Response

Eligibility Criteria

The fellowship is open to all journalists, activists, and civil society actors who:

  • Are aged between 21 and 35.
  • Have at least 2 years of proven experience in advocacy, tech, research and data, impactful journalism, humanitarian activities, or public policy.
  • Are employed in or affiliated with a reputable organization.
  • Have an interest in leveraging technology for social impact.

Benefits

Selected fellows will receive:

  • An opportunity to join a mentorship program tailored to their personal projects and areas of expertise.
  • Access to a community of civil society actors across the six geopolitical zones and professional resources.
  • Publication or feature of their projects on HumAngle Media.
  • Skills acquisition in data-informed advocacy, AI/tech in storytelling, and activism.
  • All-expense-paid travel to the FCT for the five-day training and an accompanying stipend.

Expectations

Fellows are expected to:

  • Commit to the five-day in-person training and complete the three-month program.
  • Engage in one innovative project leveraging their learnings in technology.
  • Submit monthly reports on project development and execution.
  • Develop their projects based on their passions and skills, aligned with the fellowship’s objectives.

Personal Project Requirements

Projects should focus on issues such as accountability, human rights, transparency, and democracy, using innovative approaches that leverage technology. Potential components of projects may include:

  • Direct humanitarian service.
  • Advocacy campaigns within communities or through digital means.
  • In-depth journalistic reports.
  • Step-down training.
  • Policy advocacy and research.

Projects must hold public interest, involve the use of the HumAngle FOI platform, and have SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound) goals for the three-month duration of the fellowship.

Long-term Engagement

The fellowship aims to establish a long-term engagement between HumAngle and its alumni to sustain the initiative’s objectives for the public good.
