About the NIMASA World Maritime Day Essay Competition 2024

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is pleased to announce the World Maritime Day Essay Competition 2024, an initiative aimed at celebrating the 2024 World Maritime Day and engaging Nigerian youths in the maritime sector. This competition provides an excellent platform for students to explore the theme “Navigating the Future: Safety First!”, while also creating awareness about the vast opportunities in the maritime industry.

About NIMASA

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, formerly known as the National Maritime Authority, plays a crucial role in regulating shipping activities, maritime labor, and coastal waters within Nigeria. NIMASA is also responsible for conducting inspections, enforcing maritime laws, and providing search and rescue services.

The World Maritime Day, observed globally under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), highlights key issues related to shipping safety, maritime security, environmental protection, and the welfare of seafarers.

Eligibility Criteria

To participate in the NIMASA World Maritime Day Essay Competition 2024, applicants must:

  1. Be first or second-year students enrolled in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
  2. Provide proof of studentship, including a letter of admission and a valid student ID card.
  3. Submit an essay of up to 1,200 words (±10%), double-spaced, in MS Word format, using font size 12.
  4. Avoid plagiarism; all submissions will be screened for originality.
  5. Include their name, telephone number, and email address at the end of the essay.
  6. Adhere to all submission guidelines; non-compliant essays will be disqualified.

Competition Benefits

Winners of the NIMASA World Maritime Day Essay Competition 2024 will receive the following awards:

  • 1st Prize: N500,000 education grant, a laptop, a plaque, and publication of the winning essay in NIMASA’s magazine, The VOYAGE, and on the NIMASA website.
  • 2nd Prize: N350,000 education grant, a laptop, and a plaque.
  • 3rd Prize: N250,000 education grant, a laptop, and a plaque.
  • Consolation Prizes: Seven awards of N100,000 education grants each, along with plaques.

Winners will be notified within two weeks after the competition deadline. Prizes and awards will be presented at a ceremony, the details of which will be announced later.
