The World Bank Legal Internship Program aims to provide first-hand exposure to the daily operations of the World Bank by closely collaborating with staff in the Legal Vice Presidency. Interns will work directly with leading development professionals and senior management, contributing to legal services and participating in high-profile events and conferences throughout their internship.

This internship is offered three times a year for up to three months, primarily at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C., and in selected country offices. The Spring Internship typically runs for 10-12 weeks between March and May, depending on organizational needs.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the World Bank Legal Spring Internship Program, candidates must:

  • Hold citizenship of an IBRD member state.
  • Be enrolled in an LLB, JD, LLM, SJD, PhD, or equivalent legal academic program during the internship period (e.g., for the Spring Cycle, enrollment must be between March and May).
  • Demonstrate an excellent command of the English language.

Preference is given to candidates with proficiency in a second language, especially one of the World Bank’s working languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish. Applications are encouraged from eligible international and U.S.-based students alike.

Key Responsibilities

Interns will have the opportunity to engage in various tasks, including:

  • Conducting legal assignments under the supervision of experienced lawyers.
  • Performing research on assigned legal issues, utilizing various resources such as law files and digital databases.
  • Conducting comparative legal analyses on a range of topics, identifying legal and policy issues, and suggesting solutions.
  • Participating in project teams alongside supervising lawyers.
  • Assisting in organizing conferences and meetings.
  • Handling ad hoc assignments as requested by supervising lawyers.

  • Résumé
  • Statement of Interest
  • Proof of enrollment in a relevant legal degree program (LLB, JD, LLM, SJD, PhD, or equivalent) and academic transcript(s).
  • A short essay responding to a research question posed by the Legal Vice Presidency for the current application period.
