Overview

The ECOWAS Women and Clean Energy Scholarship 2024 is an initiative of the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) to support the ECOWAS Policy for Gender Mainstreaming in Energy Access. Funded by CAD 1.5 million from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, this program aims to enhance the participation of women in the energy sector across West Africa.

The Women and Clean Energy in West Africa (WOCEWA) project is designed to foster a new generation of women leaders in energy by providing fully funded scholarships and internships in ECOWAS energy institutions and agencies. This initiative seeks to increase women’s involvement as consumers and suppliers of clean energy within the private sector.

Scholarship Details

The WOCEWA Scholarship covers:

  • Tuition fees up to $2,500 annually
  • Health insurance
  • Laptop valued at up to $700
  • Internship Opportunity: Fully funded six-month internship, including travel costs, insurance, and a monthly stipend of $800.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the ECOWAS Women and Clean Energy Scholarship 2024, applicants must:

  • Be citizens of one of the ECOWAS Member States.
  • Be enrolled in the first year of a master’s degree at a recognized institution in West Africa.
  • Be female and have a background in STEM with a focus on energy.
  • Be under 32 years old by the end of 2024.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/5 (equivalent to 14/20 for Francophone systems).
  • Not hold any other scholarships from another organization.
  • Provide truthful information, as false declarations will result in permanent suspension from support.

Scholarship Benefits

The WOCEWA Scholarship provides up to $3,200 per year for a maximum of two years. This amount may cover:

  • Tuition Fees and Health Insurance: Capped at $2,500, with fees paid directly to the training institution by ECREEE. Any excess beyond this cap must be covered by the applicant, while any surplus funds will be transferred to the applicant if fees are below the cap.
  • Laptop: A computer valued at up to $700.
  • Internship: A six-month placement at ECREEE or an ECOWAS energy institution, including travel, insurance, and a monthly stipend of $800.

Applicants must submit the following documents:

  1. A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  2. Copy of passport biodata page
  3. Certified copies of bachelor’s certificate
  4. Official transcripts from the bachelor’s degree
  5. Proof of registration for master’s degree courses
  6. Bank details of the university for tuition fee payments
  7. Proof of admission to an eligible West African university in a relevant course
  8. A letter of motivation to the ECREEE Executive Director (300-500 words)
  9. Commitment to respect the program’s terms and conditions
